Border Governors Conference & NAFTA

Border Governor’s Conference

The Border Governor’s Conference is an annual gathering established in 1980 to bring together representatives of the four U.S. (New Mexico, California, Arizona and Texas) and six Mexican Border States (Chihuahua, Sonora, Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, Tamaulipas and Baja) to discuss common border issues, including:

  • agriculture
  • border crossings
  • education
  • economic development
  • health
  • tourism
  • border security
  • energy
  • science & technology
  • environment
  • water
  • wildlife
  • emergency preparedness

The Conference results in a joint declaration signed by the 10 border governors agreeing to pursue coordinated action in solving border issues. This declaration is then sent to the presidents of Mexico and the United States. Governor Bill Richardson chaired the Border Governors’ Conference in 2004.

NAFTA Institute

The yearly NAFTA Institute Supplier Meet the Buyer Trade Conference allows interested businesses to explore the potential of selling their products across North America, as well as the mechanics of importing products from Mexico, and/or becoming a supplier to Mexico’s maquiladora industry. Organizers help match potential Mexican buyers/sellers with participants in one-on-one business sessions. The event is sanctioned by the Border Governor’s Conference as an official BGC event.
